The young and impressionable Gary Harris first became captivated by music after hearing a saxophonist perform the iconic Pink Panther theme in grade school. Recognizing his newfound passion and natural musical gift, his parents gave him his first instrument — a flute. Gary embraced it with intensity, and by age ten he received his very own saxophone.
In seventh grade, he performed in his first talent show — a moment that inspired him to create music that moves people both emotionally and physically. Throughout his adolescence, Gary honed his craft by performing at house parties, store grand openings, local festivals, and musical competitions across his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.
Answering the call to further his education, Gary attended Columbus College, where he became proficient on the tenor sax. He later returned to Atlanta to study at Georgia State University and Dekalb College, expanding his mastery of both alto and tenor saxophones. College strengthened his musical foundation and deepened his connection to his instrument of choice.
After completing his formal education, Gary stepped confidently into the professional music world — showcasing his skills, building a loyal fanbase, and reinforcing his musical credibility. His talent has led him to national and international stages, including:
NARNI Black Music Festival (Italy)
Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland)
North Sea Jazz Festival (Amsterdam)
Georgia Music Hall of Fame Award Show
Atlanta Jazz Festival
Coca‑Cola Atlanta Music Awards
Benson & Hedges Jazz Festival
Since the early 2000s, Gary has been a mainstay at Atlanta’s jazz staple, Café 290, performing a signature four‑hour set that highlights his creativity, endurance, and connection with audiences.
His latest release, Here for You, is available now, with performances scheduled throughout the Southeast in support of the project. A testament to determination, patience, and the pursuit of one’s dreams, Gary Harris continues to blossom into an international musician with flair, appeal, and unmistakable artistry — the embodiment of jazz expression and all that jazz.
